What’s Driving Montreal’s Booming VFX Industry?

By
Montréal has one of the largest VFX hubs in the world and is quickly establishing a track record in Oscar winners. In 2020 and 2018, the Oscar winners for best visual effects were both studios in Montréal, and 2022 saw all five nominees in the VFX category having some degree of contribution from teams in Montréal, led by Dune. The biggest names in film and TV such as Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and Spider-Man: No Way Home have all had effects performed by VFX talent in Montréal. One of the biggest draws for VFX studios is the talent. Universities in and around the city offer a reliable conveyor belt of trained talent ready for work at the studios. There are nearly 18,000 university students on IT-based courses and more than 3,600 in arts and cinema. Then there are the cost savings, with a 28% cost advantage compared with the average 20 largest metropolitan areas in Canada and the US for IT, and up to 43% tax incentives for film production services.
