Concept: Oregon-based company Teledyne FLIR Defense has introduced a new Lightweight Vehicle Surveillance System (LVSS) with enhanced counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capabilities and novel air domain awareness (ADA). LVSS ADA C-UAS is an enhanced version of Teledyne FLIR’s field-proven LVSS platform, which combines dependable, readily deployable, cutting-edge technology for detecting and preventing the rising threats from small drones.

Nature of Disruption: To offer early warning alerts and recognition, the LVSS ADA C-UAS system uses a combination of 3D radar, EO/IR (Electro-Optical/Infrared) camera, and RF (Radio frequency) detection and mitigation sensors. Threats are identified and reported concurrently, with all radar tracks showing their position and altitude. It can also detect drone swarms by allowing operators to simultaneously monitor up to 500 radar targets. A multi-spectral imager is included in the system to capture crucial UAS elements that aid in the identification of high-risk targets for a targeted reaction. The LVSS ADA C-UAS provides a relocatable perimeter protection system that can deploy, stow, and redeploy the sensor suite immediately. Operators can use advanced, high-performance video analytics to precisely identify, track, and engage threats. The company’s new Cameleon V5 command and control software incorporates all onboard sensors and offers additional device functions as well as bi-directional communications. In addition, it gives enhanced cybersecurity measures to combat hackers.

Outlook: The issues imposed by drones on the defense sector have made securing large borders, shorelines, and forward-operating bases much more difficult.
