Google is set to build its first data centre in Austria, with the site planned for Kronstorf and expected to create around 100 direct jobs.

The project will be the company’s first data centre in the Alps region, extending its infrastructure presence in Europe.

Google said the development will also include sustainability initiatives and workforce training measures.

According to the company, the facility is being built to meet rising demand for its digital services and artificial intelligence (AI) operations.

It forms part of Google’s wider programme of digital infrastructure investment across Europe.

Google said the investment is intended to help improve Europe’s competitiveness in AI and digital technology.

At the Kronstorf site, the company plans several environmental measures.

These include a fund focused on improving water quality in the Enns river, to be carried out in partnership with the Upper Austrian Fisheries Association.

The data centre is also being planned with off-site heat recovery in mind, which Google said will contribute to the regional energy transition.

Alongside the construction project, Google is introducing a skills partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria to support workforce development.

The move adds to the company’s existing training efforts, which it said have already reached more than 140,000 people in Austria.

Earlier this year, Google outlined a separate round of investments in Singapore aimed at expanding AI capacity.

Those plans were centred on research and development, business innovation and workforce preparedness.

As part of that Singapore push, the company said it would expand local R&D by investing in human capital, including the growth of specialised teams in software engineering, research science and user experience design to create technologies for export to global markets.

In October last year, Google also announced plans for an AI hub in Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, with investment of about $15bn.

That spending is scheduled to be made over five years from 2026 to 2030.

Google said the project would be its biggest investment in India to date.
