Samsung Semiconductor India Research (SSIR), the research arm of South Korea-based multinational manufacturing conglomerate, has opened a new research and development (R&D) facility in Bengaluru, India, to support business expansion in the country.

The new facility, located at Bagmane Capital Tech Park in Angkor-West area, comprises four stories and 14,864m2 of space.

Balajee Sowrirajan, executive vice-president and managing director at SSIR, said: “It is an exciting moment for us as the new facility in Bengaluru embodies our commitment to expanding our footprint in India and enabling a vibrant environment for our exceptional team members. This new hub reinforces SSIR’s standing as a crucial player in Samsung Semiconductor’s global innovation ecosystem as we open the doors to new opportunities.”

According to Invest India research, the market for semiconductors in India was estimated to be around $23.2bn in value, and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.10%, reaching $80.3bn by 2028.

Recently, SSIR has partnered with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) to build a Quantum Technology Lab, which will focus on integrating cryogenic control chip with qubits and single photon sources, along with addressing reliability challenges in quantum technologies. The lab will serve as a hub for technological advancement, training, and collaboration with other national and international quantum research institutions.

SSIR currently employs over 4,500 people in India. Following news about the expansion, the company plans to hire an additional 700 individuals, including recent graduates and experienced professionals.
