PGE Group and Ørsted have selected GE Vernova, represented in Poland by GE Power, and Polimex Mostostal as contractors for onshore infrastructure for the 1.5GW Baltica 2 offshore wind farm in Poland.

The onshore infrastructure will export power from Baltica 2. Along with Baltica 3, it is part of the larger Baltica offshore wind farm project.

The onshore connection infrastructure for the wind farm will be established in Poland’s Pomerania region near Osieki Lęborskie, within the Choczewo commune and Wejherowo district.

As the general contractor, PGE and its partner will execute the engineering, procurement and construction.

The scope includes a 275/400kV high-voltage transformer substation and onshore export cable lines.

PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna management board president Wojciech Dąbrowski stated: “This year we are starting the construction of an onshore transformer station and onshore export lines for Baltica 2, which constitute the connection infrastructure necessary to deliver 1.5GW of power from our first offshore wind farm.

“It is with the onshore connection that the construction of an offshore power plant begins. The finalisation of this contract was possible thanks to specialists from PGE Baltica, a subsidiary developing PGE Group’s offshore programme.

“Baltica 2 offshore wind farm will deliver electricity needed by the Pomerania region, which for the most part is currently supplied from the south of Poland. The additional source will increase energy security not only of the region but of the entire country. The first electricity from Baltica 2 will be fed to the Polish power system in 2027.”

Construction is set to commence in 2024, with the infrastructure’s testing and activation planned for 2026 and 2027.

PGE and Ørsted aim to operationalise Baltica 2 by the end of 2027 and the 1GW Baltica 3 by 2030.

The completion of these projects is contingent upon a final investment decision.

Together, Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will establish the Baltica offshore wind farm with a combined capacity of 2.5GW.

This venture will make a substantial contribution to Poland’s transition to renewable energy, supplying clean electricity to four million Polish households.

In June 2023, the developers selected SEMCO Maritime and PTSC Mechanical & Construction for the design, manufacturing and commissioning of offshore substations for Baltica 2.

These substations, each fitted with two transformers, will collect, transform and transmit the electricity generated by the wind turbines to the mainland.

In July, Navantia-Windar and Orient Cable were chosen to provide foundations and array cables.
