A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk), a Denmark-based shipping and logistics company, has invested $92.81m (NZD150m) to open a new cold chain facility at the Ruakura Superhub in Waikato, New Zealand, making the company’s biggest infrastructure investment in the country.
The new 18,000m2 multi-modal facility can load 40-foot containers weighing 29 tons of goods onto train carriages. It uses the dual-carriage State Highway 1 and direct rail connectivity to the Port of Tauranga and the Port of Auckland.

The cold chain facility allows the customers to retain the quality of their products during transit by housing nearly 30,000 pallets of products in both cold rooms and blast freezers. In less than a day, these blast freezers can freeze goods to international food standards, maintaining its quality and guaranteeing fresher supply at the point of delivery. The facility will handle large volumes of products imported and exported via New Zealand and the larger Asia-Pacific region.

We have operated in New Zealand for 27 years and we are enthusiastic about fostering sustained growth and forging these long-term partnerships with our customers.”
At the same time, Maersk has partnered with the local Waikato-Tainui tribe, which owns the land on which the Ruakura Superhub sits. Maersk has also collaborated with Apollo Projects, a New Zealand-based commercial construction company on the design and construction of the facility, and supply chain consultant TMX Transform for project management and property advisory.
