Indian car parts manufacturer Mobis India, part of the South Korean automotive company Hyundai Motor Company, has inaugurated its new electric vehicle (EV) battery system assembly plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
The new site is aimed at addressing the surging demand for electric mobility in India. It is initially manufacturing nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery packs but will also produce lithium iron phosphate batteries eventually. The Hyundai Creta Electric will be the first EV model to be equipped with battery packs assembled at this facility.

The plant spans over 3.3ha and is located next to an existing Hyundai manufacturing facility with a view to promoting synergies between the two. It has an initial annual capacity of 36,000 units, with scope for increasing that to 75,000, according to The Hindu. Up to 255 direct and indirect jobs will reportedly be supported.
Park Ki Chul, managing director at Mobis India, is reported as commenting: “This new EV Battery System Assembly plant represents a strategic leap forward in our efforts to support India’s transition to clean and sustainable mobility.”
In a post on LinkedIn, TRB Rajaa, Minister for Industries for Tamil Nadu, said: “This facility is also a step forward in our ongoing efforts towards further localisation, with key EV components now being made in Tamil Nadu. It’s a shining example of smart manufacturing, bringing in high-value jobs and solidifying our place as the #EVCapitalofIndia!”
The new Tamil Nadu EV battery plant adds to Mobis’ growing investment in this sector. Over the past two years, it has announced investments in Spain, Indonesia, and the US, among others.
