South Korean car parts company Hyundai Mobis has broken ground on a new $128m electric vehicle battery systems assemblies (BSA) plant in Navarre, Spain.
The new plant, its first in Western Europe, will be a dedicated facility for stable supply to Volkswagen. The announcement follows the battery system assembly (BSA) contract secured by Volkswagen in August 2023.
Mobis’ new plant is situated on a site of 150,000 square meters. It is expected to have an annual capacity of 360,000 battery systems and is scheduled to start production in 2026.
Jung In-bo, head of Mobis’ new Spanish plant said, “We are committed to being Volkswagen’s long-term partner through stable auto component supplies, and we will strive to diversify our supply base in Europe, including supplying upcoming models for our client. The factory in Spain will play a crucial role in driving the company toward electrification and increasing global orders.”
BSA combines a battery pack, a battery management system, and other components. The BSA produced at the plant will be supplied to Volkswagen’s factory in Pamplona, located about 14km away.
The new plant is part of Mobis’s Mobility Move 2.0 strategy. It is targeting an average annual sales growth of 30% in the European market through 2030 on demand for its core electrification technologies.
