US-based Ohmium International has announced plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in Chengalpattu district in Tamil Nadu, India. The planned facility involves an investment of around $48m (INR400 Crores). The firm is headquartered in California and designs and manufactures proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers enabling green hydrogen production.
The announcement was made after a successful memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between representatives from Ohmium and the state government.
M K Stalin, chief minister of Tamil Nadu said, “Another successful day in San Francisco. We have secured a Rs 400 crore investment from Ohmium in Chengalpattu district, creating 500 jobs. This marks a significant step in nurturing the ecosystem for green energy production and fuelling a sustainable future.”
The chief minister’s delegation is on a visit to the United States seeking investments in Tamil Nadu. The ministers have secured over $107m (INR900 Crores) in investments. Six companies, including Nokia and PayPal, signed MoUs in San Francisco.
This is Ohmium’s second latest investment in India. In July 2024, it launched a new gigafactory in Doddaballapura, just outside the southern city of Bengaluru.
It is also one of eight companies selected to receive incentives under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Incentive Scheme hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
