India-based truck manufacturer Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has opened a new mechatronics lab at its Oragadam facility in Chennai, India. The firm is a subsidiary of German Daimler Truck AG.

DICV’s new laboratory improves the speed and accuracy of evaluating software architecture. This will lead to 70-80% cost reductions compared to conventional practices. Quality and testing procedures have also been accelerated, with the tasks now taking days instead of weeks or months.

The lab’s infrastructure includes a flashing station for pre-production verification of all electronic control units. This ensures hardware and software compatibility before production which reduces mistakes and the need to relaunch products.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) reproduce on-road data in the lab which contributes to initial software changes. The lab also enables safe verification of driver state monitoring (DSM), avoiding risky in-vehicle trials.

Mr. Pradeep Kumar Thimmaiyan, president of product engineering & chief technology officer at DICV emphasised the lab will be “a hub for innovation” and “position [the company] on the global stage.”

It will serve as “the core of [DIVC’s] future electrical and electronic architectures” and fits within the company’s “long term vision” of being an industry leader in the commercial vehicle sector. Kumar also noted how the move “underscores our commitment to ‘Make and Develop in India, for India and the World’, embodying our vision to not only cater to domestic needs but also to set new benchmarks internationally.”

DICV’s mechatronics lab will enhance the efficiency, safety and performance of its trucks and buses. It will also expedite the development time of new generations of vehicles.

Last year in December 2023, DICV opened two new Indian regional training centres in Pune and Haryana.

DICV manufactures heavy-duty commercial vehicles and has around 4,000 employees in the country.
