US tech giant Apple has announced that it will invest $250m to expand its campus in Ang Mo Kio, Singapore.

The expansion will “provide space for growth and new roles in artificial intelligence and other key functions”, Apple has said, and continues its “investment in upgrading facilities and state-of-the-art labs over the last 10 years, including growing space in its hardware technologies centre by 50% since 2019.”

It will see the redevelopment of two buildings acquired in 2022 that are adjacent to the company’s existing offices, ultimately combining three spaces to promote collaboration between Apple’s growing teams. Construction will begin later this year and will deliver a LEED Gold-certified campus that runs on 100% renewable energy.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said: “Singapore is truly a one-of-a-kind place, and we are proud of the connection we’ve built with this dynamic community of creators, learners, and dreamers. With our growing campus, Apple is writing a new chapter in our history here. Our Singapore teams have played an important role in enriching the lives of our customers and we can’t wait for many more decades of innovation to come.”

Apple has had a base in Singapore since 1981, and the country now serves as a central hub for the wider region, in particular for software, hardware, services and support. The company says it supports more than 60,000 jobs across the country “through direct employment, its supply chain, and the iOS app economy.” It is expanding its across Asia as it seeks to reduce its reliance on China.
