Investing in Tanzania: what you need to know

As of 2021, Tanzania has a population of 59.4 million, making it the 25th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48% males and 52% females.

There are 26.7 million people employed in Tanzania, with an unemployment rate of 1.9% – 510,613 people.

Tanzania is the 201st largest economy in the world with a GDP of $57.9bn. Tanzania’s GDP has grown by 86% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 20% by 2025.

As of 2016 there were 178,598 students in tertiary education in Tanzania, with 2.1 million students in secondary and 10.1 million in primary education. Tanzania spent 3.9% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Tanzania ranked 141st in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 144th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Tanzania finished 117th, after ranking 117th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $1bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $1.3bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Tanzania are Dar es Salaam (6.8 million people), Mwanza (968,207) and Arusha (522,779).
