Investing in Panama: what you need to know

As of 2021, Panama has a population of 4.4 million, making it the 126th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 50% males and 50% females.

There are 1.9 million people employed in Panama, with an unemployment rate of 5.8% – 119,375 people.


Panama is the 200th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $62.4bn.

As of 2016 there were 161,102 students in tertiary education in Panama, with 322,913 students in secondary and 418,852 in primary education. Panama spent 2.5% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Panama ranked 86th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 79th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Panama finished 66th, after ranking 66th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $3.5bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $1.4bn in 2018.
