Hitachi Energy will build a $528m transformer manufacturing facility in Gallman, Mississippi, in what the company described as its “largest” single investment in the US to date.

The new site will be located about 6.5 miles (10.46km) from Hitachi Energy’s existing plant in Crystal Springs.

The company—wholly owned subsidiary of Japan’s Hitachi—said the Gallman facility will be more than twice the size of the Crystal Springs site and will double overall production capacity.

The project is expected to create more than 700 jobs, according to the company.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said: “America needs more affordable, reliable and secure electricity generation, and this new investment by Hitachi will help make that happen.”

Construction is due to begin later this year, and transformer production is scheduled to start in 2029.

After the Gallman plant becomes operational, transformer manufacturing will be transferred there from Crystal Springs.

The current Crystal Springs site will then be repurposed for warehousing, training and other operational activities.

Hitachi Energy said the Mississippi project is the biggest part of a wider US manufacturing programme that now totals about $1.5bn.

Among the company's other recent US investments is a $457m expansion of its large power transformer factory in South Boston, Virginia, where ground was broken in June and which is projected to create 825 jobs.

In Alamo, Tennessee, Hitachi Energy announced a $106m expansion in August 2025 that is expected to generate more than 100 jobs.

The company is also investing a further $70m in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, to expand high-voltage grid equipment production.

Combined, the projects are expected to create more than 1,600 jobs.

The company stated that "the additional capacity will help address rapidly growing demand for electricity across the US, driven by the expansion of advanced manufacturing, industrial electrification, data centres, and other energy-intensive industries, as well as the continued modernisation and expansion of the nation's power grid."

Hitachi Energy CEO Andreas Schierenbeck added: “This investment in Mississippi, our largest ever in the US, reflects our long-term commitment to American manufacturing and building the grid infrastructure that will help power America’s growth for decades to come.”
