Weta FX, a digital visual effects company founded in 1993 by Richard Taylor, Jamie Selkirk and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, has opened its first international office in Vancouver, Canada. It follows a $1.6bn technology deal with San Francisco-based Unity in November 2021 and marks the beginning of the company’s wider global expansion plan.

The new office will initially be staffed with 75 artists and will work on a wide range of shows including the upcoming Avatar sequels. The company is also working on several additional unannounced projects for various studios and has completed work on Marvel’s Moon Knight and Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Prem Akkaraju, chief executive officer of Weta FX, commented on the new investment and talent available: “The global growth in entertainment content has allowed us the flexibility to really pursue the projects we want and to expand our business model to tap into the talent in more locations around the world… Vancouver is an established market for VFX, animation and games talent and we look forward to welcoming them into the Weta FX family.”
