China-based photovoltaic (PV) technology company Jiangsu Runergy New Energy Technology (Runergy) has begun production at its new solar module manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Alabama, US.

The new site, which is set to fulfill its first customer orders in October, is “set to become one of the leading solar manufacturing hubs” in the US, according to Runergy.

Jet Li, general manager of Runergy Alabama said, “This factory not only brings new jobs and opportunities to the area but also represents our commitment to advancing renewable energy and supporting America’s clean energy goals.”

The facility could contribute to establishing a more reliable supply chain in the country, and fits within Runergy’s globalization strategy.

Dr Jusong Wang, managing director of Runergy Alabama said, “With the increasing demand for solar energy in the U.S., we aim to meet the country’s renewable energy targets by producing our solar modules locally”

Wang added that the new facility would “reduce lead times, minimize reliance on overseas suppliers and provide customers with more reliable, cost-effective access to our solar technology.”

Solar energy has risen in the US, with solar projects demonstrating a growth rate of almost 75%. According to a report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, solar is the fastest-growing renewable energy source. Additionally, a report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) shows a 71% spike in solar panel manufacturing capacity in the US.

The company specializes in the research, development, manufacturing, and distribution of solar cells and modules. It has a network of production facilities for polysilicon, wafers, cells, and modules across China, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The investment comes amid American led efforts to curb Chinese exports, particularly in the semiconductor sector.
