Cimpor, a Portuguese concrete maker subsidiary of Taiwan Cement, has announced a $175.19m investment in modernising Kiln 7 and establishing a new research and development (R&D) centre.
The new R&D centre will serve as a hub for innovation in sustainable construction, materials science, and digital transformation. It will develop solutions that minimise the environmental impact of construction. The building will incorporate green cement made from calcined clay (LC³), which significantly reduces CO2 emissions, as well as recycled aggregates to lower the extraction of natural resources.
According to Cevat Mert, CIMPOR’s CEO for Portugal and Cape Verde, “The presentation of these two projects is a milestone for us, as it highlights the progress we have made since launching our investment plan to modernise our production centres. At the same time, the future R&D Centre is also a testament to our belief in Portuguese talent, the strength of its industrial fabric, and the role Portugal can play in transforming the construction sector across Europe.”
Pedro Reis, Portugal’s Minister of Economy, visited the firm’s facility in Alhandra, Portugal. He reviewed the ongoing construction and the plans for the R&D centre, which is expected to create over 100 highly skilled positions for both young professionals and seasoned experts.
Additionally, it will function as a centre for collaboration with academic institutions, startups, and international innovation networks, facilitating conferences, workshops, and more. It will have a living laboratory, featuring real-time assessments of its thermal and structural efficiency, as well as energy usage.
Through this investment, Cimpor hopes to become a global leader in sustainable building practices and continue supporting the climate objectives of Portugal and the European Union.
