Investing in Malta: what you need to know

As of 2021, Malta has a population of 505,521, making it the 177th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 50.1% males and 49.9% females.

There are 210,602 people employed in Malta, with an unemployment rate of 4.1% – 9,924 people.

Malta is the 254th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $13.5bn.

As of 2016 there were 13,329 students in tertiary education in Malta, with 28,776 students in secondary and 25,177 in primary education. Malta spent 4.3% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Malta ranked 88th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 84th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Malta finished 38th, after ranking 38th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $867m and private healthcare expenditure equalled $475m in 2018.
