Investing in Indonesia: what you need to know

As of 2021, Indonesia has a population of 272.2 million, making it the fourth largest country in the world by this measure. There are 50.4% males and 49.6% females.

There are 123 million people employed in Indonesia, with an unemployment rate of 5.8% – 6.3 million people.


Indonesia is the 15th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $1.1trn. Indonesia’s GDP has grown by 56% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 44% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 8.2 million students in tertiary education in Indonesia, with 25.5 million students in secondary and 28.9 million in primary education. Indonesia spent 2.6% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Indonesia ranked 73rd in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 73rd. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Indonesia finished 50th, after ranking 50th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $15.3bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $17.8bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Indonesia are Jakarta (10.7 million people), Bekasi (3.1 million) and Surabaya (2.9 million).
