Investing in Germany: what you need to know

All of the key data and information needed when considering investing in Germany.

As of 2021, Germany has a population of 83.4 million, making it the 19th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 49.6% males and 50.4% females.

There are 39.3 million people employed in Germany, with an unemployment rate of 4.8% – 2 million people.

Germany is the fourth largest economy in the world with a GDP of $4.1 trillion. Germany’s GDP has grown by 19% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 18% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 3.3 million students in tertiary education in Germany, with 6.9 million students in secondary and 3.0 million in primary education. Germany spent 4.7% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Germany ranked 22nd in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 24th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Germany finished seventh, after ranking third in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $378.9 billion and private healthcare expenditure equalled $69.7 billion in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Germany are Berlin (5.4 million people), Ruhrgebiet (5.1 million) and Berlin City (3.7 million).
