Investing in China: what you need to know

All of the key data and information needed when considering investing in China.

As of 2021, China has a population of 1.4 billion, making it the largest country in the world by this measure. There are 51% males and 49% females.

There are 710.5 million people employed in China, with an unemployment rate of 3.9% – 28.8 million people.

China is the second largest economy in the world with a GDP of $16.5 trillion. China’s GDP has grown by 172% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 38% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 30 million students in tertiary education in China, with 69.3 million students in secondary and 107.8 million in primary education. China spent 3.6% of its GDP on education in 2019.

China ranked 31st in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 46th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), China finished 28th, after ranking 28th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $418.1 billion and private healthcare expenditure equalled $280.2 billion in 2018.

The largest urban areas in China are Chongqing (31.6 million people), Shanghai (24.3 million) and Beijing (21.9 million).
