Investing in Austria: what you need to know

As of 2021, Austria has a population of 8.9 million, making it the 98th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 49.2% males and 50.8% females.

There are 4.2 million people employed in Austria, with an unemployment rate of 5.3% – 237,157 people.


Austria is the 28th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $463.9bn. Austria’s GDP has grown by 17% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 17% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 445,377 students in tertiary education in Austria, with 688,305 students in secondary and 352,792 in primary education. Austria spent 5.5% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Austria ranked 27th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 26th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Austria finished 21st, after ranking 21st in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $35.2bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $11.9bn in 2018.
