GM to move SUV production from China to US as it adjusts to tariffs

The company will manufacture the next-generation Envision SUV in Kansas amid shifting tariffs and changing vehicle demand.

General Motors (GM) has announced plans to shift production of the Buick Envision SUV from China to the US, with manufacturing of the next-generation model set to begin at its Kansas plant in 2028.

The automaker also intends to end production of the all-electric Chevrolet Bolt at the same facility in approximately 18 months.

The Envision has been imported to the US from China since 2017 and was GM’s sole Chinese-built import for nearly a decade, Reuters reported.

The decision follows ongoing trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, which have led to increased tariffs on vehicles imported from China.

GM has faced a 25% tariff on the Envision since 2018 and did not obtain an exemption during the Trump administration.

The model had drawn criticism from labour leaders and political figures concerned about overseas manufacturing.

GM’s Kansas City-area plant will also begin producing the Chevrolet Equinox SUV in 2027, shifting operations from Mexico in response to tariffs imposed on Mexican imports.

When Bolt EV production ends, GM will reconfigure the plant exclusively for combustion-engine vehicle manufacturing.

Plans also include moving Chevrolet Blazer output to Spring Hill, Tennessee, from Mexico starting in 2027.

In 2025, GM sold nearly 42,000 units of Envision, Bloomberg reported.

Production of the latest Bolt EV began earlier this month following discontinuation of the previous version last year.

The Bolt EV had previously ranked among GM’s highest-selling electric vehicles (EVs) due to its pricing.

In January 2024, GM announced plans to invest 7bn reais ($1.42bn) in Brazil between 2024 and 2028 to increase its production of EVs.

This included renewing GM’s vehicle portfolio, as well as developing new technologies for the local market and creating new businesses in the country.
