Investing in Hungary: what you need to know

As of 2021, Hungary has a population of 9.7 million, making it the 94th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48.1% males and 51.9% females.

There are 4.4 million people employed in Hungary, with an unemployment rate of 3.9% – 134,829 people.


Hungary is the 50th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $158bn. Hungary’s GDP has grown by 26% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 34% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 275,623 students in tertiary education in Hungary, with 803,549 students in secondary and 386,251 in primary education. Hungary spent 3.7% of its GDP on education in 2019.

Hungary ranked 52nd in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 53rd. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Hungary finished 47th, after ranking 47th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $7.2bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $3bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Hungary are Budapest (3 million people), Budapest City (1.7 million) and Pest (1.3 million).
