Investing in the Dominican Republic: what you need to know

As of 2021, the Dominican Republic has a population of 11 million, making it the 84th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 49.9% males and 50.1% females.

There are 4.7 million people employed in the Dominican Republic, with an unemployment rate of 6.9% – 344,114 people.

The Dominican Republic is the 192nd largest economy in the world with a GDP of $84.8bn.

As of 2017 there were 556,523 students in tertiary education in the Dominican Republic, with 924,737 students in secondary and 1.3 million in primary education. The Dominican Republic spent 2.4% of its GDP on education in 2019.

The Dominican Republic ranked 115th in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 102nd. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), the Dominican Republic finished 78th, after ranking 78th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $2.3bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $2.9bn in 2018.
