Driving growth, creating jobs and promoting a more green, inclusive economy.

The River Tyne is an iconic and ever-present symbol of the North East’s identity, history and
culture. Renowned worldwide for advanced manufacturing, shipyards such as Swan Hunter
launched some of the world’s largest ships in the early 1900s. That legacy and reputation
for excellence continues today in the offshore energy and subsea sectors.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority is a combined authority with an elected mayor that was created in November 2018, when Parliament signed off on a £600m devolution deal bringing Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside councils together in an unprecedented transfer of power and investment from Westminster to the North East.

It is tasked with initiating projects to boost growth, create jobs and create a more green, inclusive economy.

North of Tyne Mayor Jamie Driscoll was elected on a promise to support communities in the North of Tyne to create and build wealth, then keep that wealth in the region.

  • Unlocking the Economic Potential of the North Bank of the Tyne

The Tyne is at the epicentre of the UK’s offshore wind sector and is set to play a fundamental role in the UK’s transition to net zero. The sector currently employs 5,000 people locally. The proposals in this document unlock opportunities for at least 4,000 more jobs within the next ten years – creating foreign and domestic investment opportunities, while at the same time helping ensure the benefits of growth are felt most keenly by the communities along the river.
