Investing in Bulgaria: what you need to know

As of 2021, Bulgaria has a population of 6.8 million, making it the 107th largest country in the world by this measure. There are 48.4% males and 51.6% females.

There are 3 million people employed in Bulgaria, with an unemployment rate of 5.2% – 162,822 people.

Bulgaria is the 54th largest economy in the world with a GDP of $74.6bn. Bulgaria’s GDP has grown by 48% between 2010 and 2021 and is expected to grow by 30% by 2025.

As of 2021 there are 229,464 students in tertiary education in Bulgaria, with 479,781 students in secondary and 266,919 in primary education. Bulgaria spent 4.1% of its GDP on education in 2013.

Bulgaria ranked 61st in the World Bank’s Doing Business Report (2020). In the 2019 report it finished 59th. In the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report (2019), Bulgaria finished 49th, after ranking 49th in 2018.

Public healthcare expenditure totalled $2.7bn and private healthcare expenditure equalled $2.7bn in 2018.

The largest urban areas in Bulgaria are Sofia (1.6 million people), Sofia (capital) (1.3 million) and Plovdiv (649,173).
